Laurette Taylor

I became interested in Laurette Taylor after seeing Rick McKay’s Broadway documentary. Many actors talked about how much she’d influenced them and how her stage performances, especially in The Glass Menagerie, were the best they’d ever seen. It intrigued me enough to want to learn more about her.

More recently I decided to write a play about her. I was particularly interested in her silent film career. Ephemera is about what happened when she and her husband J. Hartley Manners went to Hollywood in the 1920s and failed there. The failure, however, is part of what led her back to the stage and her ultimate triumphs.

I watched the same documentary and became interested as well. Have you seen or read anything else about her?

Lots. As a result of seeing that documentary I wrote Laurette Taylor, American Stage Legend. She was always gifted, but it took her many years to hone her acting style. Very intriguing woman.
