While I am not yet ready to go totally vegan, I have been thinking about giving up milk. I still drink 2% milk but only use it in my coffee (and cooking and baking). While I am perfectly happy using a dairy alternative for cereal and smoothies, I have yet to find a good replacement for my morning (and often afternoon) coffee. Believe me, coffee is a big deal for me, and I will never give it up.
I have tried various soy and nut milks, but nothing satisfies in terms of taste and creaminess. I had read on other blogs about Trader Joe’s Soy Milk Creamer and decided to try it, especially since it is made specifically for coffee.
It looks like milk or cream when poured into the coffee. The taste is somewhat sweet (one of the ingredients is organic cane sugar), but it was ultimately unsatisfying because it did not give me that great creamy, dairy taste of milk. In fact, it had a soy aftertaste that I find unpleasant. I ended up compromising by using a mixture of half 2% milk and half soy milk creamer. I get the good creamy taste, and I have less dairy in my diet.
Also, I use a lot of milk in my coffee, and I was surprised to find that a tablespoon of the soy milk creamer has 15 calories and 1.5 grams of fat. In addition, it offers little nutritional value. Unfortunately, I’m still waiting for the perfect dairy replacement.
Four out of five stars.
